This is Bobby, boyfriend to my friend Hanna, whom I painted about a year ago. Fun to have done sort of a couple’s portrait-thingy!
I haven’t really noticed before, but looking at the pictures of the two of them made me think about some of the technical progress I’ve made during this year. I’m more secure in my penmanship now, moving away from graphite portraits with shadowing to letting only inked lines make out the foundation. It can be tricky not making a person look flat and get lines right on a surface that’s as uneven as a watercolor paper is. But that’s kind of a fun part. I do want to get bolder with the coloring and learning more about the watercoloring techniques. I’ve tried liquid ink now and I like it very much.
